My current academic interests focus on the representations of historical warfare from the late classical era to the Hellenistic period. Shortly, my recent research analysis span "From Pyrrhus to Pydna."
I have recently completed and defended a doctoral thesis titled "Funerary Monuments of Messapian Elites: Battle Narratives and Plant Motifs in Limestone and Painted Pottery (Late Fourth to Third Centuries BC)."
This study examines the sculpted decoration of the monument known as 'The Base from Ugento' and the friezes from the Palmieri Hypogeum in Lecce.
In this research, I employed a multidisciplinary approach, intersecting archaeology, the history of ancient art, and ancient history. By providing a detailed analysis of often-overlooked depictions, the study investigates how these images reflect and influence the cultural, social, and political dynamics from the unique viewpoint of the Messapian aristocracy. This research highlights the region’s strong cultural identity and its innovative interactions with broader Mediterranean traditions.
